"hl2 stopped working"

When I play Gmod for even a few minutes, the game shuts down and "see subject" appears. HOW DO I MAKE IT STOP!?!?

I AM NOT SURE, BUT SOMETHING SIMILAR HAPPENS TO ME WHEN I TRY TO PLAY TF2 SOMETIMES. EITHER MY COMPTER WILL SHUT DOWN AND RESTART, OR IT WILL JUST FREEZE BECAUSE THERE IS NOT ENOUGH POWER BEING PROJECTED TO MY GRAPHICS CARD OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
WHAT I DO TO GET AROUND THIS, IS SHUT DOWN EVER OTHER PROGRAM I HAVE RUNNING, SUCH AS SKYPE, GMAIL NOTIFIER, FIREFOX, MSN, AND WHATEVER ELSE, LEAVING JUST STEAM OPENED UP. NORMALLY THAT FIXES THINGS RIGHT UP.

You need to lower the settings on the games.
For GMod, go to games, left click on Gmod, click properties, click set launch options, and put this in:
-dxlevel 70 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0
For TF2, do what I said, except put:
-dxlevel 81 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0
