If you don't think it's great, you know nothing about true video games.

I'm actually replaying the game right now and I remembe why it was so great:
First, the dialogue and signs. Aside from stuff you here from regular characters, there is a treasure trove of humor that comes from NPCs, signs, and some items. Just exploring and finding all these stray signs with witty humor is phenomenal in a SNES game.
Also, every enemy has their own unique song. Well, kind of. There are a bunch of songs that play depending on what enemy you fight. Also, the game will automatically complete a battle if it knows you can kill the enemy in one turn.
Finally, it's a simple game. You can figure out the entire game and not worry about easter eggs or 100% completion, because it's a straightforward, simple game. The fights are easy (but far from simple) and the locations are very diverse.
It's really a must-play no matter how old you are. I got the game when it first came out, and I'm enjoying it 10+ years later.

The beautiful ambient, analog sounding music. The Lynchian eerieness underneath everything. The challenging difficulty. The whole atmosphere and depth it has. That last part is hard to describe, but just play the game.

It's a strange blend of childish and creepy, not unlike the Tails Doll. After all, the final boss was based off a rape scene. But the real charm comes from when you play it and just play it without worrying about stuff like, "Oh geez, do I have to level up a lot?" or "Is the final boss super-hard like the old Final Fantasy games?" or "Should I recommend it to my friends?". When you just play the game and just PLAY the game, that's when it really hits you.
Strange, funny and heartrending really are the best words to describe it. It's a fitting motto for the series, even if it's only the third game's motto.
